this is kpix 5 news. for the first time since a major salmonella outbreak began, tens of thousands of pounds of chicken pulled off store shelves here in the bay area. gps is supposed to steer you in the right direction. how it nearly cost one man and several other drivers their lives. both sides in the ba talks are back, meeting face to face. why they spent much of today separated. good evening. i'm ann notarangelo. the threat of a monday bart strike that could bring the bay area to its knees is still looming. but there are signs of hope. kpix 5's brian is outside the talks. apparently the two sides weren't even in the same room? >> reporter: that's what we're hearing. we're also hearing we might have an update any moment,

although we've been waiting for about an hour. maybe a half hour ago, some of the people involved in the talks walked down the street. not sure if they're on a dinner break or done for the night. but unfortunately, that sign behind me sums it up. day 153. that means no deal has been done yet. at stake, as you mentioned, a messy monday morning commute and beyond, if the strike plays out. bart tallies about 400,000 rides a day. you can imagine what that would do to joks and the local economy if it shuts down. today, each group has been here all day. but at last check, they haven't met face to face, staying in different rooms, going over their own strategy. the three unions did get a few things they've been asking for. most pormly, grace crunican has been involved in these talks in person. this is what both sides said to the cameras earlier today. >> we're not clear what time we'll all be at the same table yet. it will definitely happen today. we do know that.

>> the bigger issue involving health care, health and safety. those are the big issues out there. >> reporter: now, peter has said yesterday, quote, the elements are here to reach an agreement. but one day later, there is no agreement. the strike deadline is now less than two days away. we'll have an update coming up at 6:30. >> and we'll be monitoring developments on the bart talks tonight, as written said. you can find updates and commute alternatives anytime on kpix.com. well, a glimmer of hope from capitol hill that there might be an end to the budget stalemate was dashed today. the partial government shutdown is now in its 12th day. numerous proposals to fund the government and raise the nation's borrowing limit are being floated on capitol hill. but as susan reports, so far, none of them have emerged as

the winner. >> reporter: no deal was reached to end the budget standoff. the best chance for a breakthrough appears to be in the senate. majority leader harry reid and minority leader mitch mcconnell held a meeting this morning. >> the conversations were extremely cordial but very preliminary, of course. nothing conclusive. this should be seen as something very positive. >> reporter: reid is hopeful an agreement can be reached but offered no specifics. house speaker boehner says talks with president obama have stalled. house rebublicans have a plan to reopen the government and raise the nation's borrowing limit for six weeks, but they want concessions from the obama administration first. the president says there can be no conditions on reopening the government. >> the president is freezing out america. >> democrats can't simply refuse to negotiate. they have to be willing to work together. >> reporter: the obama administration says if no deal

is reached to increase the nation's borrowing limit before next thursday, the government will have no money to pay its bills. >> national parks and monuments are closed because of the government shutdowns, but some states are covering the expenses of leaving some landmarks open until the shutdown ends. california officials say they cannot afford to do that. food stamp recipients in at least 17 states have been unable to use their food stamp debit cards today because of a computer problem. officials say a routine test of backup systems by xerox, which provides the technology, resulted in a system failure. in some areas, the system is back up and running. but some states, including california, are still having problems connecting. in a statement, a u.s. department of agriculture spokesman said etb cards have temporarily stopped working today due to a technical issue. they are working to fix this issue and ebt cards will work

again once it is resolved. this issue is not related to the government shutdown. a bay area costco store has recalled rotisserie chicken linked to a nationwide outbreak. the south san francisco costco has recalled nearly 40,000 pounds of roast chicken and related products such as soup, chicken salad and leg quarters bought in the store between september 11 and 23. a recorded message says to throw out or return any leftover chicken products. dozens of arrest this week in california. 72 people are suspected of operating without a contractor's license and they could each face six months in jail and a $5,000 fine. more than 50 could also face charges of illegal advertising. most of the suspects were found through ads on craigslist. well, this may sound

awkward, but edward snowden has received an integrity and intelligence award. the associates for integrity presented the former national security agency contractor with his prize this week in russia. this is the first video of snowden, since july when he was shown at an airport in moscow pleading for asylum. snowden has created a fire storm with his disclosures about the nsa and its surveillance of u.s. citizens. >> people all over the world are realizing these programs don't make us more safe. they hurt our economy. they hurt our country. they limit our ability to speak and think and live and be creative. >> the award was presented by four former u.s. government officials. snowden faces espionage charges in the united states. however, russia has granted him asylum. it could have been a disaster. imagine a pilot's shock and surprise when a plane door comes off in mid-flight.

something important was mis: the door to the airplane! the "beach king airlines" j ey regional a pilot flying a private jet was in mid-air when he noticed something important was missing. the door to the airplane. it took off thursday afternoon. wasn't long before the pilot noticed the door was missing, and he turned around. as for the 75-pound door, it dropped out of the sky and it landed on a roof of a motel. no one was injured. the ntsb will be investigating just how the door fell off. well, a bay area national park had been planning its annual event for months. and then came the federal shutdown. and it looked like richmond's

homefront festival would be one of the casualties. don knapp is in richmond where the same spirit that helped win world war ii helped the festival go on. >> reporter: that's exactly right. it's hard to take on the federal government. but the festival plan here in richmond went on as scheduled, thanks to volunteers and organizers recommending that rosy the rivetteer can do attitude. the duck is here to help the city tell its war stories. not the scary stories but tales of inspiration and the role of women who served on the homefront. it's the eighth annual festival for kids called "we can do it." but this year, they almost couldn't do it, because of the government shutdown. betty would usually be here in her park ranger uniform. this year, she's not allowed to wear it. the rangers are out of work. >> my uniform meant much to me,

because i don't think that most children of color see enough park rangers to be able to choose that as a career path. >> reporter: but the festival and history lessons go on in the privately owned plant where they built army trucks and tanks. >> they built more ships in a shorter period of time. i think there were 747 ships produced. and we have our rosies here today, our 80-year-old and 90- year-old rosies! >> i want the young people to know they can do anything! >> reporter: she was just 20 years old when she became a welder. >> we didn't know that we were so capable of all these other opportunities that came to us when we came to work in the shipyards. >> reporter: some of those skilled will be taught to a select group of richmond girls, welding, carpentry, history, as well as something about

diego... by guiding him on railroad tracks. is is what's le a tourist says a gps system nearly cost him his life in san diego by guiding him onto railroad tracks. this is what is left of his rental car after it was hit by a train. the driver got out before the collision. he was visiting from philadelphia and says instead of keeping him on the road, the gps put him on the tracks. theamtrak machinist says this is the fifth incident in a month with a gps system. >> they all told me the same thing. they had their gps run. >> law enforcement is looking to see if there is a glitch with the gps units. a massive cyclone has slammed into india's eastern

coastline. the cyclone made landfall today. seawater pushed inland, swamping villages is, where many survive as farmers, in mud and thatched huts. damage estimates aren't expected until sunrise tomorrow. >> they had winds up to about 140 miles an hour when it made landfall, at about 9 a.m. our time. we will have to wait for the sunrise out there to see how much damage there was. back in the bay area, this is the most stable weather probably on earth. just a weak marine layer offshore and temperatures in the 70's right now. this is down in milpitas, by the way, live. the numbers right now are expected to go north. temperatures will be increasing a little between today and tomorrow. by the way, the 49ers are playing tomorrow. numbers will be 70 degrees and sunny skies for game time at

1:25 tomorrow afternoon. and the italian heritage parade, looking pretty good on sunday. the high pressure that is offshore brings the temperatures up. it's going to have most of its effect inland. the shoreline will not get that warm, because the ocean is so cold. if you're within ten miles of the coast, mix that with an onshore flow and it's going to be chilly. but when you go inland, that's when you warm up a little bit. don't expect a great beach day but not bad inland. temperatures will drop into the mid-40's tonight with mostly clear skies. a very slow warming trend continues. inland around 80 degrees by monday. 78 in san francisco. 76 at fresno. if you are really heading out of the bay area, we'll have

sunshine tomorrow at sfo with westerlies by the afternoon to 30 miles an hour. a high of 70. south land fine. and new york has got partly cloudy skies. for us, sunshine and 74 in san jose. cupertino hit 75. and in santa clara, 73. in the east bay, the numbers will warm a little bit. livermore, exactly where it should be this time of year. 78 is their average high. walnut creek, 79. right around the central bay, san francisco, in the city, 66 degrees. in the extended forecast, we'll warm it up to about 80 degrees on monday, tuesday, wednesday. and then the numbers will begin to fall as we get toward the latter half of the week. back into the low 70's by next weekend. we're gonna cool it off by next weekend, but still no rain in sight. around the bay all next week, low to mid 70's. and at the beach, if you can get there, because a lot of
